Fissure sealants

Fissure sealants are a dental treatment used to protect the teeth from decay. They are typically applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, which are more prone to developing cavities due to their deep grooves and crevices.

The procedure involves painting a thin layer of a special dental resin onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth. The resin fills in the deep grooves and crevices, creating a smooth surface that is easier to clean and less likely to trap food and bacteria.

Fissure sealants are a quick and painless procedure that can be done in a single visit to the dentist. The teeth are first cleaned and dried, and then the sealant material is applied and cured with a special light to harden it. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth, and no drilling or injections are required.

Fissure sealants are most commonly applied to the permanent molars of children and teenagers, as these teeth are most susceptible to decay in the early years after they erupt. However, adults with deep grooves in their teeth may also benefit from fissure sealants.

Fissure sealants are a safe and effective way to prevent tooth decay, but they are not a substitute for good oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing. They should be used in conjunction with regular dental check-ups and cleanings to maintain optimal oral health.
