WHAT IS A MUSCLE RELAXANT INJECTABLE

Injectable muscle relaxant is a diluted neurotoxin that temporarily paralyses the muscle.

When used in the masseter muscles (below your cheekbones) it can also help to manage facial and jaw pain.

What are jaw muscle relaxant injectables?

The masseter is one of the jaw muscles that helps you chew, and is located on the side of your face, connecting your cheekbone to your lower jawbone.

The treatment uses the diluted neurotoxin to temporarily block nerve signals in the masseter, so the muscle is partially deactivated.

What are jaw muscle relaxant injectables used for?

  • managing teeth grinding

  • reducing jaw tension, pain, and clenching

  • relieving headaches

  • contouring an enlarged and square jaw

  • creating a more balanced face shape for enlarged muscles

possible side effects

Patients can return to their routines with little downtime. There is usually no discomfort or pain associated, however, we ask that you avoid strenuous activities or pressing down on your jawline for the rest of the day. The initial results take about 7 – 10 days and will continue to develop over the following several weeks. You may notice a slimmer jawline for an over enlarged or square jawline, when the masseter muscles begin to atrophy and relax.

Common side effects include mild redness, soreness, and bruising at the injection sites. Others may experience muscle pain. These effects are temporary and can be alleviated with a cool compress or over the counter medication.

Since results are not permanent, patients may need to schedule additional sessions in the future.

Very rarely the smile can become uneven following muscle relaxant injectables because the risorius or smiling muscle originates at the cheek and can cross the masseter muscle. There is a similar risk for every health care provider providing injectables for the masseter muscles. This is not a typical occurrence.

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

  • One week prior to your treatment, avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Advil, Motrin, Aleve or Ibuprofen), Vitamin E or fish oil supplements. These may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

  • Adding leafy greens to your diet will boost your Vitamin K and help to reduce the possibility of bruising and swelling.

  • Bruising is possible and therefore we recommend that you schedule any social plans accordingly for 7 days following your injection.

  • While initial effects of the injection may be visible in as soon as 3-5 days, you should expect your final results to be achieved 2-3 weeks after the injections.

AFTER APPOINTMENT

  • Do NOT have any type of facial massage or place your face in a facial cradle for a massage for 24 hours following your injection.

  • Do NOT have any facial laser or electrical treatments for two weeks following your injection.

  • You may resume your skin care program the same day as your treatment. Makeup is also ok to wear the day of your injections.
