Porcelain Veneers Explained by a Cosmetic Dentist

If you're wondering whether veneers might suit you, it helps to have the full picture first. Veneers involve permanent changes to your natural teeth, so it pays to understand them properly before you decide. Here's a plain-English guide from our team.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They're designed to change the shape, size, colour or surface appearance of a tooth. Each veneer is made specifically for your tooth, and your dentist will match the shade and shape to your surrounding teeth as closely as possible.

What Can Veneers Be Used For?

Veneers may be an option for teeth that are chipped, worn at the edges, unevenly shaped or slightly gapped. They can also be considered for discolouration that hasn't responded to whitening. They're not the right answer for every concern though, and sometimes a simpler, less invasive treatment will suit you better. That's the kind of thing a good consultation should help you work out.

What Does the Veneer Process Involve?

The process usually takes a few appointments.

It starts with a consultation, where your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and bite and talks through what you'd like to change. Planning often includes digital tools such as our digital smile design process, which helps you and your dentist discuss shape and proportion before treatment begins.

Next, the tooth is prepared. This usually involves removing a small amount of enamel so the veneer can sit properly, and it's important to know that this step is not reversible. Impressions or scans are then taken so the veneers can be made, and a temporary may be worn while you wait. At the final visit, the veneers are checked and bonded in place.

How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?

With good care, veneers are designed to last many years, but they aren't permanent in the sense of never needing attention. Over time they may chip, wear or need replacing, and the natural tooth underneath still needs looking after. Your longevity will depend on things like oral hygiene, diet, habits such as grinding or clenching, and regular check-ups.

What Are the Risks and Downsides?

Every cosmetic treatment comes with trade-offs and veneers are no exception. Because some enamel is removed, the change to your teeth is permanent. Some people experience temporary sensitivity, and veneers can chip or debond, particularly if you grind your teeth. If you do grind, your dentist may recommend protection such as a night splint. Results vary from person to person, and your dentist will talk through the risks that apply to you before any treatment begins.

Are There Alternatives to Porcelain Veneers?

Yes, and it's worth exploring them. Composite veneers are built directly onto the tooth and usually involve less preparation. Teeth whitening may address some types of discolouration on its own. If the main concern is tooth position, clear aligners might be worth considering instead. Sometimes a combination works best.

How Do You Choose a Cosmetic Dentist in Brisbane?

Choosing who treats you matters as much as choosing the treatment.

A few sensible things to look for are below…

  • Check that your dentist is registered on the AHPRA public register, which anyone can search online.

  • Ask what training and experience they have in cosmetic dentistry, and check that any title they use matches their registration.

  • Look for someone who explains the risks and alternatives, not just the benefits.

  • Make sure you understand the cost and what it includes before you agree to anything.

  • Give yourself time to consider your options before committing.
