7 Things to Know Before Getting Dental Implants

Losing a tooth (or a few) changes more than your smile. It can affect how confidently you eat, speak and laugh in front of other people. Looking for dental implants? You've probably already got a few questions swirling, so we've put together the things our patients most often want to know before starting treatment.

At Brisbane Smile Boutique, our all-female dental team in Spring Hill talks patients through this exact process every week. Here's what we think is genuinely useful to know before your first consultation.

1. A Dental Implant Replaces the Whole Tooth, Not Just the Crown

A lot of people assume an implant is just a fancy crown. It's actually a small titanium fixture that sits in the jawbone, taking over the job your natural tooth root used to do. A custom crown is then attached on top to recreate the visible part of the tooth. Because the fixture is anchored in the bone rather than sitting on the gum, it's designed to function much like a natural tooth once healed.

2. Not Everyone Is a Candidate Straight Away, and That's Okay

Whether implants are right for you comes down to a few individual factors, mainly gum health, bone volume and general oral hygiene. You're often a good starting candidate if you have one or more missing teeth, healthy gums, and enough bone to support an implant. If bone volume is a bit low, that's not automatically a dead end either. Grafting procedures can often build up the area first, sometimes in partnership with a periodontist. The only way to know for sure is a proper assessment with 3D scans, which is exactly what happens at your first visit.

3. The Process Happens in Stages, Not All at Once

Implant treatment isn't a single appointment. It typically unfolds over a few key stages.

Your consultation comes first, where we take scans and x-rays, look at your bone quality, and map out a plan that suits your goals. Next is placement, where the implant fixture goes into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Some mild discomfort or swelling afterwards is normal and your dentist will talk you through recovery. Then comes healing, where the implant gradually fuses with the bone in a process called osseointegration, sometimes with a temporary tooth in place while you wait. Finally, your custom crown is fitted and matched to your natural smile.

Every plan looks a little different depending on your starting point, so your dentist will map out timeframes specific to you.

4. Healing Takes Time, Usually 3 to 6 Months

This is often the part patients are most curious (and a little nervous) about. Osseointegration, the process where the implant bonds with your jawbone, generally takes between three and six months. It's not a fixed number though. Healing speed depends on things like bone quality and your overall health, so your dentist will give you a realistic timeframe once they've assessed you.

5. Cost Depends on Your Specific Treatment Plan

At Brisbane Smile Boutique, implant treatment starts from around $6,000, which can cover the implant fixture, diagnostic scans and the final crown. That said, no two treatment plans are identical. Complexity, the number of teeth involved, and whether extras like bone grafting are needed will all shift the final number. The only way to get an accurate figure is a consultation, where we can put together a quote based on your actual mouth rather than a generic estimate.

6. Implants Are Built for the Long Haul

One of the appeals of implants is longevity. With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, they're designed to last many years, and for a lot of people, decades. Results genuinely vary from person to person though, so it's worth thinking of this as a long-term investment in your oral health rather than a one-off fix.

7. Looking After an Implant Is Simpler Than You'd Think, But Not Risk-Free

Day to day care is refreshingly familiar. Brush and floss like you would your natural teeth, and keep up with check-ups and professional cleans roughly every six months. As with any dental or surgical procedure though, there's always some level of risk involved, and implants aren't guaranteed to succeed for every patient. Published failure rates are relatively low, and outcomes are often linked to things like smoking, oral hygiene and underlying health conditions. Your dentist can walk you through what's relevant to your specific situation so you're making a fully informed decision.

Every mouth is different, and the right treatment plan really does come down to your individual goals and oral health.
